In 1892, Charles Blair Macdonald carved Chicago Golf Club out of 200 acres of Wheaton prairie that reminded him of Scotland — and gave America its first 18-hole course. The 3rd is his boldest idea on the ground: a 219-yard par 3 modelled on a clifftop hole he had played at Biarritz, France, with a deep swale cut straight through the green. Land on the wrong tier and the putt you're left with has nothing to do with the shot you just hit. It is the original template — copied by architects on great courses ever since.
