St. Andrews - 18th hole

Golf has been played across this stretch of Fife coastline for more than 600 years, and no hole carries more weight than the last. Standing on the 18th tee, the fairway stretches out wide and welcoming, but the hole still asks questions right to the end. The Swilcan Burn crosses just short of the green, and the Valley of Sin waits to catch any approach that comes up short.   • 1984: Seve Ballesteros holes the winning putt on the 18th green and celebrates with his iconic double fist-pump, one of the defining images in Open Championship history.
  • 1995: Constantino Rocca holes an extraordinary 65-foot putt across the Valley of Sin on the 18th green to force a playoff with John Daly.
  • 2000: Tiger Woods walks up the 18th to complete an eight-shot victory in The Open, having remarkably avoided every bunker on the Old Course throughout the championship.
  • 2005: Jack Nicklaus plays the 18th for the final time in The Open at St Andrews, bringing an emotional close to his championship career after pausing to acknowledge the crowds on the Swilcan Bridge.
  • 2005: Tiger Woods finishes on the 18th to claim his second Open Championship at St Andrews, winning by five shots.
  • 2015: Zach Johnson completes a playoff victory over Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen to become Champion Golfer of the Year.
  • 2022: Cameron Smith birdies the 18th to cap five consecutive birdies, shooting 64 to win The Open in one of the greatest closing rounds in championship history.
